GENDER BENDER’S OPENING: Meeting with the writer Carmen Maria Machado

Before diving headlong into the new edition of the festival, we have some good news for you!

The American writer Carmen Maria Machado will meet the public of Bologna and inaugurate the 19th edition of Gender Bender. The event – with free admission – is on 22 July 2021 at 6.30 pm in the covered square of the Salaborsa Library, Piazza del Nettuno 3, Bologna.

Machado’s books marvelously portray the facets and diversity of queer people‘s lives, both by depicting them in new ways and by addressing delicate issues with a very personal literary vision.

In the short story collection “Her body and other parties” (Italian printing 20219), finalist for the National Book Awards, she explores the queer female world by overcoming gender boundaries and mixing genres such as horror, science fiction, magic realism, eroticism, and comedy.

In her memoir “In the Dream House” (Italian printing 2020) she talks about the bewilderment and loneliness of being in a relationship marked by psychological abuse with a beautiful and charismatic woman, who was also unstable and violent. Machado blends in different literary genres and pop culture elements, in a courageous effort to work on the trauma and leave it behind by deconstructing the stereotype of the idyllic relationship between women.

She has published short stories and essays in The New Yorker, Granta and other magazines. In Italy, her works have been published by Codice Edizioni.

She will be talking with the author Francesco Cattani, research fellow and adjunct professor of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Bologna.
