20 LIES, 4 PARENTS AND A LITTLE EGG (20 LEUGENS, 4 OUDERS EN EEN SCHARRELEI)
Dylan (Nils Verkooijen) is the teenage son of Emma (Anneke Blok), his biological mother, and her partner Ilse (Marieke Heebik). Following an accident at home which means Emma has to go into hospital, Ilse asks Sjors (Marcel Musters) and his partner Bert (Mark Ram) to temporarily look after Dylan. What Bert doesn’t know is that Sjors, as well as being one of Emma’s closest and long-term friends, is also Dylan’s biological father. With his rebellious behaviour Dylan will bring to light, against his will, the secrets, lies and silences that have characterised the relationships between his ‘four’ parents for the last 15 years.
Made for television, Smitsman’s film alternates drama and comedy, without the use of stereotypical gender clichés, presenting a fresh, alive and realistic portrait of modern-day parenting and the responsibilities involved. The film revolves around the dynamics created between the five protagonists, which the incredible actors bring to life perfectly, making them extraordinarily real, without resorting to farce or melodrama. Also thanks to its non-television-like direction, which with its slowed down sequences and intelligent editing becomes innovative and smart, yet remaining faithful to the telling of the story.
