Growing up in an Iranian family in Brooklyn isn’t easy, but it is even more difficult if you are a bisexual girl: this is Shirin’s (Desiree Akhavan) situation, struggling to find to her own identity and trying to balance her innermost desires and that which society expects of her. But everything she does seems to go wrong: her girlfriend Maxine (Rebecca Henderson) leaves her, irritated by the fact their relationship has to be hidden, things at the school where she works aren’t going that well and she is beginning to be soffocated by her family’s family traditions. As she mentally goes over the important moments of her relationship with Maxine, Sharin lets the rebellious side of her character take over and heads into a series of pansexual adventures trying to find herself, ending up in complicated and often hilarious situations.

From the director of the acclaimed web series The Slope, an autobiographical film which portrays in a humorous way the difficulties of coming out in a hyper-traditional family: “The film is inspired by what I went through after the end of my first real relationship with a woman. As well as having my heart broken, I was going through the most difficult phase of coming out: just after you’ve finally decided to tell your parents.” Appropriate Behavior is an enjoyable, touching and realistic film, which doesn’t fall into the usual clichés: forget scenes of a coming out with hugs and tears or the distinct division between good and evil. The scenes of passion are disarming with their realism, delicateness and spontaneity.

The film was presented at the Sundance festival in 2014.
