THE SUMMER SIDE (DEL LADO DEL VERANO)
Tana (Macarena Gómez) wants to go and live in Australia with her boyfriend, leaving her disfunctional family and her love-hate relationship with it far behind. When her father Salvador dies things get even worse, bringing to the surface resentment, envy, jealousy and hypocrisy that had been festering. What holds her back from leaving is the fact she is worried about her mother, who is now a widow, and her cousin Tomás (Eduardo Casanova), a gay teenager who isn’t brave enough to come out to his mother Blanca (Antonia San Juan). In the meantime, her relationship with her sister Estela (Mariam Hernández) continues to become even more filled with misunderstandings and jealousy.
With betrayals, anonymous phone calls, gossip, funerals and unwanted pregnancies, Del lado del verano is a black comedy filled with characters each more terrible than the next: almost nobody comes out unscathed under the caustic eye of Antonia San Juan, who wrote, directed and in the film plays the chatterbox – and hysterical – Blanca. The result is a Spanish Parenti serpent/Funeral Party (it was filmed in the Canary Islands), with incredibly irresistible dialogues: “more than anything else I am interested in the spoken word. The study and exploration of its numerous subtleties is a passion which has nutured me during my 15 years acting all over the world. Word which interact with the thoughts and feelings of the audience.”(Antonia San Juan).
Del lado del verano was shown at Frameline in San Francisco. Antonia San Juan, famous as the transsexual Agrado in Almodóvar’s Tutto su mia madre (1999), she has made over thirty films, including Amnèsia (2002) directed by Gabriele Salvatores. This is her second film after Tú eliges (2009).
