Elisa Manici’s book presentation and conversation with Biancamaria Furci

In Western society, fat people seem to be guilty of something, and that guilt has deep origins: they are guilty of living in their own bodies. In Grass *, published by Eris edizioni, Elisa Manici starts from her experience as a journalist and fat queer activist to address in a transversal way the issue of fat phobia, which is inherent in our culture. From media representation and workplace environment to the speculations about one’s health, the author analyzes the stigma that falls on fat bodies, which are often considered to be wrong and unworthy. The essay examines the characteristics of this phenomenon, in the hope that, outside the rhetoric of self-love, all bodies can be considered worthy.

Elisa Manici is a professional journalist and librarian. She worked as editor-in-chief for the journal La Falla, published by Bologna’s Cassero LGBTI+ Center, for two years (2019-2021). She has written for different feministpublications such as La ventisettesima ora and Pasionaria, as well as for other general interest magazines and journalssuch as Il Tirreno and The Vision. She is a queer transfeminist, she has also been a LGBTQIAP + activist for 25 yearsand has long been involved in organizing cultural events (Soggettiva, Lesbicx). She is a proud fat queer activist since2009.
