IO SONO UNA PARTE DEL PROBLEMA (I’M PART OF THE PROBLEM)
What is the real weight of internalised homophobia in the construction of our identity? This is the promise behind the new work by the Catania based group CaneCapoVolto. Io sono una parte del problema follows the discussion introduced by their previous work Abbiamo un problema (We have a problem) (2012) based around the triad of Sex, Religion and Death. This film “offers a representation – a series of representations – of the homophobic ‘problem’ as an enigma, and shows the first tragic, then comic logic behind the ‘internal enemy’ which is naturally a central figure for the definition of homophobia.
“The space for research therefore, seems to reduce to a more internal space, in other words the ‘colonised’point of view of the problem itself”. (Marco Pustianaz).
Theatrical sketches, transgender rituals, King-Queen identity fluctuations, the words of Thomas Bernard and Francesco “Warbear” Macarone Palmieri and the ‘return’ of doctor Joseph Nicolosi (the promoter of the much discussed ‘reparation theories of homosexuality’, considered to lack any scientific foundations): Io sono una parte del problema is an voyage-investigation into the diversity of gender, seaching for the deep link between identity and homophobia. “The next time somebody comes to you with a problem, listen carefully and imagine that the problem is yours. You yourself, want to be part of this problem.”
Formed in Catania in 1992, the CaneCapoVolto group develops an investigation into the expressive possibilities of vision and the dynamics of perception, using original techniques in how the images are treated and manipulated. They have created installations, videos and short films, among which Impero (2003) Uomo Massa (2007), The Abolition of Work (2010).
