“I can’t say I am a woman, but I am not a man. I am – something… one of God’s creatures, a distorted creature.” The story of Julia K., transsexual, prostitute, alcoholic and drug addict, who when she was 18 left her homeland, Lithuania (where she passed her exams with the highest grades at the art school in Klaipeda) to move to Berlin and begin a life without compromises. A story of uprooting and anger, losing oneself and self discovery, told in this documentary made over a ten year period, during which the filmmaker J. Jackie Baier (who is also transsexual) has photographed and filmed Julia during her day to day life: as she sells her body on the streets, in the bars of underground rooms of a porn cinema, as she shoots heroin or as she does the shopping, until her return to Lithuania, the places of her youth.

Julia is an intense, raw and intimate documentary: thanks also to the empathy between the director and the protagonist, who met in 2000 while working in the same club. “I first saw her when I was working in a bar in Wilmersdorf” Baier tells us. “For a while we worked together, plying the clients with alcohol and sexual offers, anything which would have got us money. I soon left that job. The maitress just didn’t think I was a good prostitute and in reality she was right, even if studying Julia I learned a lot about the profession.”

Best film at the Outview Festival in Athens 2014, and best international documentary at Tel Aviv LGBT IFF 2014.

In collaboration with MIT – Movimento Identità Transessuali.
