Jone San Martín
Legítimo/Rezo (NATIONAL PREMIERE)

Lenght: 20’
Choreography: William Forsythe
Interpreter:
Jone San Martín
External agent:
Josh Johnson

The new chapter of the partnership between the dancer and choreographer Jone San Martín and the American choreographer William Forsythe, Legítimo/Rezo is almost an essay, in dance form, on the creative process behind choreography. In this overwhelming solo, especially created for Jone by Forsythe, her body becomes a mediator between choreographic writing and interpretation, between guidelines and free improvisation. A short circuit which is amplified by the hearing problems of the dancer, an element which Forsythe’s indications must take into account: thus creating a reflection on the mechanisms of perception and de-codification, on the distance between the message and its interpretation, and on how a single stimulus or a single figure can be interpreted in often very different ways. In order that every notation of the choreographer can become movement, the dancer needs to better master her improvisation techniques. Here then the creative process does not finish with the writing phase, but is completed through its execution, in an almost magical balance between freedom and responsibility. “Forsythe’s indications provide only the general form of that which the pièce could become,” the dancer explains, “I am the one who creates the actual content.”

Born in San Sebastián in Spain, Jone San Martín has worked with the Barcelona Ballet, the Ballet Nacional de España and the Ballet royal de Wallonie in Belgium. In 1992 she became a member of William Forsythe’s Frankfurt Ballet, which today is known as The Forsythe Company.

Yasmeen Godder, an Israeli choreographer who has always been interested in themes relating to feminine identity, has created this solo performance for Francesca Foscarini, winner of the Equilibrio Roma 2013 prize for interpretation: on the stage, the performer strips away a series of female stereotypes, baring her more visceral and animal part, through an unstructured language made up of gestures pushed to extremes. A series of spasms, jerks, sinuous or disjointed movements which exploit Foscarini’s wide range of interpretative talents. A performance which is also a reflection on the relationship created between performer and audience and the Maieutic value of this interaction. “It’s as if each time a gap opens up between the stage and the stalls, the fourth wall being immediately torn down. For the whole duration of the performance, I look for direct contact with the spectator through my gaze: I hide, I let myself be looked at, I make fun of the spectator, I watch him disappear”. (Francesca Foscarini)
