Presentation of the book “Dio odia le donne” (Il Saggiatore, 2016)
Introduced by Vincenzo Branà
Christianity, Judaism, Islam: when it comes to discriminating women, the main monotheistic religions all agree with each other. Norms, traditions and customs are the forbidden fruit that perpetuate social control over women. Giuliana Sgrena exposes and reports on the mutilation that the razor of religious misogyny performs on a daily basis. There are the extreme phenomena such as “pharaonic” circumcision, war rape, and feminicide; but there are also more subtle and insidious forms, such as the ideals of purity and virginity. Through an analysis of biblical and Koranic sources, Sgrena scratches the surface of customs and works her way back to the very root of female submission.
