In a South Korea where women are still relegated to a subordinate role in society and more and more pensioners are living in poverty and isolation, The Bacchus Lady by E J-yong (presented at the latest Berlinale), tells the story of So-young (Yoon Yeo-jeong), an old prostitute who in a park bestows her services to elderly customers who are alone and marginalized. Despite everything, the woman agrees to take care of an abandoned child, and faces the requests for help of both those who are alone and the sick, up until to the extreme consequences that follow. From one of the most interesting directors of contemporary Korean cinema, a bittersweet drama about sex, old age, death and dedication to others.
