TO BE TAKEI
Sometimes, for some, being gay is all to do with science fiction. George Takei is not just the unforgettable actor who played Sulu in Star Trek: he is also a social media star (with millions of fans who follow him on Facebook) and, not least, a tireless activist for gay rights (Takei came out in 2005, when he was 68, and in 2008 he married Brad Altman, his lifetime companion).
Jennifer Kroot shows us the public and private lives of Takei, both his daily routine alongside Brad, his numerous interventions in the Star Trek conventions full of Trekkies and his campaigning for LGBT rights, also telling the difficult years of his childhood spent in an internment camp for Japanese Americans. An unforgettable portrait of a character full of humour, grace and wisdom.
