XIU XIU LIVE
Gender Bender presents a concert by one of the most original and innovative bands of the last decade, who from their new wave origins have created an unmistakable sound, a musical fusion of industrial, folk, electro-pop, electronic and noise: Xiu Xiu, Jamie Stewart’s prolific, unpredictable and tormented creature, for whom his is the extraordinary voice and the main architect.
From their debut in 2002 with Knife Play, to their recent Angel Guts: Red Classroom, Xiu Xiu have managed to bring together the most demanding critics and diverse audiences, winning praise and approval from the gods of music, such as Mark Hollis from Talk Talk, and artists such as Devandra Banhart and Lawrence English, who have also collaborated with the band. Xiu Xiu’s trademark is Stewart’s dark and multiform voice, often compared to that of Robert Smith or Trent Reznor, in perpetual balance between fragility and rage, whisper and scream, dream and nightmare: a dark, pounding and hypnotic sound, suspended between melody and noise, which in Angel Guts: Red Classroom almost completely renounces the use of guitars, using an obsessive drum and synth machine. An album where you can hear echoes of bands such as Suicide and Einstürzende Neubauten.
The current formation is made up by Stewart, Angela Seo and Shayna Dunkelman.
