Gender Bender 2020 changes shape and lands in the Cavaticcio Park!

We have great news for you! Yes, the first one is that the Gender Bender festival will happen! The second one is that we have decided to bring it forward to the end of the summer and we’ll do all this in the open air, so that we can enjoy the event in complete safety, while enjoying the last days of the summer season. The third news is that Gender Bender will be celebrating its eighteenth birthday with this year’s edition!

So take out pen and paper, your smartphone, your tablet or any other electronic agenda, and write down these dates:

The eighteenth edition will take place from September 7 to September 18 at the Cavaticcio Park.

The festival features a covered stage for the dance shows and a screen for the cinema events. The audience will be able to sit down on the bleachers of the park in order to respect the safety distance regulations. Due to the need to implement flying restrictions, exceptionally, this edition will not have an international dimension, since it will only count with the participation of Italian dance companies.

Some of the artists who have confirmed their participation are: Silvia Gribaudi, Masako Matsushita, the M_I_N_E group,  Daniele Ninarello,  Luna Cenere, Riccardo Guratti.

The event will take place immediately after the Danza Urbana festival. This organization was possible thanks to the accurate joint work of both festivals. This allows us to offer an efficient and at the same time rich program that focuses on the Italian contemporary dance in Bologna during two weeks.

On the other hand, the international film selection is still confirmed. Some of the movies will also be available through online platforms. The film program will be discussed taking into account the actions adopted by the Coordination of the Italian LGBTQ Film Festivals, a network that involves nine Italian festivals, which aims at coordinating their activities, especially in this moment in which a lot of things need to be changed, in terms of common actions and projects. Together with Gender Bender we have the following festivals: Bari International Gender Film Festival, Florence Queer Festival, Immaginaria International Film Festival  in Rome, Milan’s Festival Mix,  Orlando Identità Relazioni Possibilità  in Bergamo, Sardinia Queer Film Festival in Cagliari, Sicilia Queer filmfest in Palermo and Some Prefer Cake: Lesbian Film Festival in Bologna.

Gender Bender is produced by the Cassero LGBTI Center and it is possible thanks to the contribution of the Emilia Romagna Region’s Culture department, the Municipality of Bologna, the Ministry of the Artistic and Cultural Heritage, and the Unipolis foundation.

This desire to reshape the festival is certainly motivated by the present situation, but it also proves that Gender Bender has always loved its mission to communicate, using artistic expression as its voice, and it proves that we have always had the need to operate on the reality that surrounds us. Furthermore, even if our reality appears to have changed profoundly, trying new places and imagining new possibilities of being together, appears as a useful opportunity to imagine a possible new future.

We will reveal other news and previews very soon.  Stay tuned!
