Queendom
A film by Agniia Galdanova
United States-France, 2023, 98′
o.v. with italian subtitles
What does it mean to be a queer artist in Putin’s Russia? For four years, director Agniia Galdanova followed the life of Gena, an eccentric and courageous queer artist whose looks and performances take over the streets of Moscow heedless of the crowds and possible repercussions from the authorities. Due to her strong protest actions against the war in Ukraine, the artist was forced to leave Russia. The atmospheres of this film, which is a combination of a documentary and a visionary story, capture Gena’s creative flair along with her moments of vulnerability, showing us how her art is a valuable and powerful tool for claiming freedom.
