Chiara Frigo
Chiara Frigo, choreographer and performer, co-founder of Zebra Cultural Zoo, has developed her artistic interest in the field of dance and performing arts. Graduated in molecular biology, in 2006 her first creation Corpo in DoppiaElica was awarded the third prize at the Festival Choreographers Miniatures in Belgrade. With her solo Takeya she was first acknowledged at italian and international level. Dance Europe defined her one of the most promising talents in Europe. This work was presented with the GD’A Veneto award and was selected by both Anticorpi XL and the Aerowaves dance network. Since 2009 she has taken part in international projects collaborating with Amsterdam’s SNDO, Vancouver’s Dance Center, London’s The Place, Rotterdam’s Dansateliers, Copenhagen’s Dansescenen, and Madrid’s Paso a 2-Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid. In 2010 she started to collaborate with Montreal’s Circuit Est choreographic centre, where she has been a guest for production residencies since then.
When We Were Old, a collaboration with Canadian choreographer Emmanuel Jouthe, premiered at Festival Tangente in Montreal, and presented its European premiere at Romaeuropa Festival. Suite-Hope won the Residences 2011 de La Caldera (Barcellona) and was chosen to represent Italy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012.
The wish to reach new audiences and involve the local communities led her to create Ballroom, a project for teenagers that was presented in Iceland, in the Netherlands, as well as in numerous Italian festivals.
In 2017 she created a choreography for Balletto di Roma, Stormy, inspired by the topic of migrations. Her piece Himalaya marked the beginning of a research around the topics related to spirituality in arts and was selected by the call Acasa/Scenario Pubblico (Catania). “Himalaya_drumming”, presented as a preview at Cinar Off in Montreal and at Centro Nave in Santiago de Chile, is part of a cycle of performances inspired by the four elements which will be completed in 2022: Post (solo piece), Fight or Flight (a show for six performers/musicians), and Deep End (video-art project).
She is currently involved in Blackbird, a community project inspired by art as a form of activism and collective creation; Miss Lala al Circo Fernando, a performance conceived for Marigia Maggipinto, a historic performer of Tanztheater Wuppertal, about the idea of a body as a living archive of memories.
She curates video art projects, design projects, and is engaged in theatre collaborations.
