Simona Bertozzi
Simona Bertozzi is a choreographer, dancer, and performer, currently based in Bologna, where she graduated from DAMS with a thesis on Loïe Fuller. After studying artistic gymnastics and classical dance, she furthered her training in contemporary dance across Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, and England, working with artists such as Tomas Aragay (Societat Doctor Alonso-Spain) and from 2005 to 2010 with Virgilio Sieni. Since 2005, she has been leading an authorial journey of research and choreographic production, creating works with various groups of dancers and performers, including professional adult performers, as well as children, teenagers, amateurs, asylum seekers, and second-generation young immigrants. In 2007, she won the GD’A (Young Dance Authors of Emilia Romagna) choreographic competition, and in 2008, she founded the Simona Bertozzi Company | Associazione Culturale Nexus.
In 2008, she was the Italian choreographer selected for the Aerowaves festival at The Place Theatre (London), and in the same year, she participated in the international project Choreoroam with her solo piece “Terrestre”, supported by British Council/The Place, Dansateliers/Rotterdam, and Bassano Opera Festival. With the Gemelli Kessler collective (Simona Bertozzi, Marcello Briguglio, Celeste Taliani), she won the 2009 Il Coreografo Elettronico. In his career he has won numerous awards including the Hystrio Corpo a corpo award in 2019 and the ANCT Award (National Association of Theater Critics) in 2019.
Over the years, she has established important collaborations with artists and scholars, including Francesco Giomi, artistic director of Tempo Reale, Enrico Pitozzi and Cristiana Natali, professors at the University of Bologna, and Tabea Martin, choreographer and dancer, with whom she co-created “This is my last dance”, a work that had significant European circulation, including at the Swiss Dance Days.
