On July 28 in collaboration with the Bologna Film Archive, Gender Bender presents the international comedy classic Some Like It Hot.

At a time when gender and queer issues were not yet appearing in mainstream Hollywood scripts, the film talks about transvestism and shakes up the typical conventions of the 1950s-60s by playing with gender roles.

Saxophonist Joe (Tony Curtis) and double bassist Jerry (Jack Lemmon), two penniless jazz musicians, live from improvisation. After being left without work after a police raid on an underground club, they unintentionally become witnesses of the Saint Valentine’s Day massacre. Having escaped and well aware that they are being hunted down by “Spat” Colombo’s gang, perpetrators of the massacre, they attempt to cover their tracks by disguising themselves as women and calling themselves Josephine and Daphne. They then join a women’s jazz orchestra on a trip to Florida. On the train and during the journey they get to know and sympathize with Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), a beautiful singer and ukulele player with a drinking habit, who is recovering from romantic disappointments and on the hunt for a billionaire to marry.
