A MARGEM DO RIO (THE RIVERBANK)
A film by Matheus Farias and Enock Carvalho
Brasil, 2026, 104′
v.o. italian subtitles

The Riverbank is set in Recife, a city criss-crossed by rivers and mangrove forests. Izaquiel, a cleaner at an evangelical church, leads a life divided between the discipline of the day and the clandestine world of the night. By day, he has to endure pressure from a charismatic boss who urges him to convert and insists that he remove his nail polish and earrings before starting work. By night, he seeks out secret encounters along the riverbanks. His encounter with Jeremias, an enigmatic fisherman, opens up a new emotional and erotic dimension in his life. In a polarised Brazil where religion, morality and violence are intertwined with power, eros becomes a genuine form of resistance for Izaquiel: a space of freedom carved out from under the weight of dogma and social control.
