CARAVAGGIO
A film by Derek Jarman
UK, 1986, 93′

In 1610, gravely ill and in hiding in Porto Ercole, a dying Caravaggio recalls the defining moments of his life in a stream of consciousness, assisted by his faithful and silent servant, Jerusalemme. At the heart of the narrative lies the passionate, brutal, and visceral love triangle between the painter, Lena—his lover and model—and Ranuccio Tomassoni, the painter’s patron and favorite model, whose relationship will end in tragedy. Amid eroticism, violence, and plays of light that evoke the painter’s art, Jarman transforms Caravaggio’s life into an intense reflection on art and passion.

Bio
Derek Jarman, English painter, filmmaker, and theater and film set designer, was a key figure in the counterculture of the 1970s and 1980s. Thanks to his disruptive, nonconformist spirit, he became a point of reference for the queer community. His cinema — dreamlike and subversive, brimming with references (structural, iconographic, and biographical) to various artistic disciplines — is stylistically eclectic: centered on the interplay between past and present, history and nature, collage and narrative, it oscillates between complete improvisation and meticulous control over the staging.
