Céline Sciamma, French director and screenwriter and one of the most influential voices in contemporary arthouse cinema, will be a guest at the Gender Bender Festival in Bologna, presenting This Is How a Child Becomes a Poet, a delicate and profound exploration of the home of the great Italian poet Patrizia Cavalli, and the feature film TUTTI FRUTTI, produced as part of the renowned Où en êtes-vous? series of artist portraits commissioned by the Centre Pompidou.

THIS IS HOW A CHILD BECOMES A POET (France, Italy, 2023, 16′)
With an intimate and deeply felt gesture, Céline Sciamma enters the Roman apartment where the great Italian poet Patrizia Cavalli lived, shortly after her death. The short film is a delicate and sensory exploration of the spaces she left behind, where objects, light, dust and memories evoke what remains of the poet’s artistic and human legacy. An independent production accompanied by music from Chiara Civello, the film lingers on each object as a witness to a life that has passed, yet remains present – preserved in the memory of the wooden floorboards, or in a book worn by time.

TUTTI FRUTTI (France, 2026, 40′)
Produced as part of the renowned Où en êtes-vous? series of artist portraits commissioned by the Centre Pompidou, TUTTI FRUTTI is a free-flowing, personal cinematic essay by Céline Sciamma. The film brings together private archive footage, documentary images and visual notes filmed by the director entirely on her own. Through fluid, rhythmic editing, Sciamma reflects on the practice of making films alone, the urgency of capturing reality and the search for hope through images. A creative logbook becomes a work of rediscovery, memory and the reinvention of fiction.

Bio

Céline Sciamma is a French director and screenwriter, one of the most compelling voices in contemporary auteur cinema. Having made her mark with the “youth trilogy” (Naissance des pieuvres, Tomboy, Bande de filles), one of the recurring themes in her work is the exploration of desire and gender identity. In her films, she captures love that arises free from imposed models, revealing itself to the characters within the spaces and social contexts they inhabit. With Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Best Screenplay Award at Cannes 2019) and Petite Maman (2021), she establishes a poetic “female gaze” by reimagining narrative dynamics in which the protagonists are free to define themselves, thereby showcasing the female experience in all its three-dimensionality, complexity, and authenticity. She is also a co-founder of the feminist collective 50/50, an organization that promotes equality between men and women, as well as the inclusion of sexual and gender diversity in the film and audiovisual industries.
