Iranian filmmaker Negin Ahmadi travels to the war zone of northern Syria to document the lives of women in the YPJ, the Kurdish women’s brigade that fights against ISIS. For these women, fighting is also a way to escape the constraints of the patriarchal society in which they grew up. Ahmadi creates a visual diary that intimately explores the role of these women in the struggle for their freedom and self-determination, skillfully interweaving their moments of everyday tenderness and the cruelties of war.
