Desire Lines
A movie by Jules Rosskam
USA, 2004, 83’
original version (english) with italian subtitles (CC)
A hybrid film between fiction and documentary, that blends archival materials and narrative fiction to explore the often forgotten history of transgender men. Ahmad, an Iranian man who migrated to America during the AIDS epidemic, has hidden his identity for decades. At age sixty, he decides to go to the LGBTQ+ archives in Chicago, where he bonds strongly with Keiran, a young nonbinary archivist, who guides him through the LGBTQ+ world of the 1970s and 1980s. Mixing touching interviews by activist Lou Sullivan and imaginary encounters at cruising spots, Ahmad reimagines his youth as an openly gay trans man in an erotic journey of self-discovery and liberating desire.
