USCIRE FUORI!

Photography as a tool for testimony, affirmation, and queer visibility in Italy
Cured by Emanuele Carlenzi and Martina Cavalli

1 show for this event
Bruno Briatta, Manifestazione contro il Concordato, promossa dal Partito Radicale e dal FUORI!, Roma, 20 settembre 1975. Stampa fotografica ai sali d'argento, 178 × 128 mm. Archivio fotografico, Fondazione FUORI!

The event presents the book edited by Emanuele Carlenzi, dedicated to the history of FUORI! – the Italian Revolutionary Homosexual United Front (1971–1982) – and draws on an initial survey of the Photographic Archive of the FUORI! Foundation in Turin. It explores photography as a tool for testimony, visibility and resistance, and as a means of preserving queer memory, bringing together art history, gender studies and activism. Within this framework, photographic collections held in archives dedicated to preserving and promoting LGBTQIA+ memory take centre stage. These archives emerge as active sites of resistance, where identity and collective affirmation intersect and are continually shaped.

The event is part of the project FUORI fuoco! Manifestazioni, luoghi, persone (Edizioni ETS), supported by Strategia Fotografia 2025 and promoted by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, with MAMbo—the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna—and the Flavia Madaschi Cassero LGBTQIA+ Documentation Center serving as cultural partners.

Bio

Emanuele Carlenzi (Rome, 1992) is an Italian historian of photography and art. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Art History and a master’s degree in Art Criticism (2017) from the University of Rome “La Sapienza.” He subsequently participated in the curatorial program at the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation and began a Ph.D. in the History of Photography at the IMT School for Advanced Studies in Lucca. In 2022, he was also a research scholar in London at the History and Theory of Photography Research Center at Birkbeck, University of London. His research focuses primarily on the history and theory of artistic photography in Italy, with a particular emphasis on critical debates and photographic exhibitions at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. A central thread of his studies concerns the intersections between images, memory, LGBTQIA+ subjectivities, and archival practices.

Martina Cavalli is an Italian curator, art historian, and academic. Born in Modena in 1993, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Classical Studies from the University of Bologna (2016) and a master’s degree in Contemporary Art History from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (2019). She also attended the CAMPO curatorial program at the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation. Her research focuses primarily on the relationships between feminist movements and contemporary art in Italy. Concurrently, she serves as an Academic Fellow and teaching assistant at Bocconi University in Milan, where she teaches courses related to cultural mediation and the economics and markets of contemporary art. She has collaborated with museums such as the Castello di Rivoli and the MADRE Museum in Naples, focusing in particular on organizing the Rome-based archive of artist Tomaso Binga. She also co-curates the Study Day on Art Criticism at MAMbo in Bologna and worked as a gallery manager from 2019 to 2021.
