MONUMENTUM DA
A show by Cristina Kristal Rizzo and Diana Anselmo
Italy, 40′

Long marginalized and alienated by phonocentric systems of power that have sought to erase it throughout history, LIS (Italian Sign Language) is a human, embodied, living language that emerges from the margins to generate new forms. Monumentum DA explores the relationship between speech (sign) and language (dance), tracing the dissolution of the boundaries between these two semantic fields.
LIS and Diana Anselmo’s body are an archive in constant transformation: linguistic monuments that construct a narrative on the political value of the artist’s body, while simultaneously evoking—here and now—the shared and universal history of the community.

Biographical Note
Diana Anselmo is a deaf performer, activist, and improvised human being. While pursuing her master’s degree in Theatre and Performing Arts at IUAV University of Venice, she debuted her first performance “Autoritratto in 3 atti” (2021), which continues to be presented at various Italian and international festivals (DIS_Festival – Serbia, ORME Festival – Switzerland).
She is a founding member of Al.Di.Qua. Artists, the first association in Europe created by and for disabled artists, through which she has spoken at numerous European festivals (IntegrART – Switzerland, DansFunk – Sweden, Holland Dance Festival – Netherlands). She is the youngest member of the British Council’s Cultural Advisory Board and is bilingual in LIS and Italian.
Cristina Kristal Rizzo is a dance maker who has been active in the Live Arts scene since the early 1990s. Based in Florence, she trained in New York at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and worked in the studios of Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown. She is one of the founders of Kinkaleri, a company with which she played an active role in shaping the international contemporary choreographic scene, receiving numerous awards including the Ubu Prize.
Since 2008, she has pursued an independent choreographic practice, focusing her research on theoretical reflection combined with a strong dynamic impact, aimed at regenerating the very act of creation and opening new perspectives on the present. She co-created the special project La Piattaforma della Danza Balinese (The Balinese Dance Platform) for Santarcangelo Festival 14 and 15, as well as the 21st edition of Live Arts Week with Xing.
Since 2019, she has been actively engaged in the Sup de Sub project, working with very young non-professionals from the banlieues of Marseille and Paris.
