The Summer With Carmen
A movie by Zacharias Mavroeidis
Greece, 2024, 106′
original version (greek) with italian subtitles
Demosthenes and his aspiring filmmaker friend Nikitas, while relaxing on a queer naturist beach in Athens, are looking for ideas for their film debut: the starting point is Carmen, a delightful little dog whose owner is Demosthenes’ own ex. The film they envision is what the audience sees on the screen: a continuous metacinematic montage in which the two friends find themselves confronting the past and issues they thought were resolved. In an attempt to recreate “the hero’s journey” in the script, the two characters question narrative rules and bring to light the complex dynamics of queer bromance.
